Originally founded in 1866 as Northfield College, this small, private, liberal arts college located in the quaint town of Northfield, MN, is one of only a few schools that runs on a trimester system. An undergraduate-only institution of higher learning, Carleton offers a close-knit community of approximately 2,000 students, enabling a student to faculty ratio of 9:1, and an average size class of 16 students. The school offers more than 1,000 courses across 32 majors, with social sciences, physical sciences and biological sciences among the most popular. Uniquely, all Carleton students must submit a writing portfolio after their third term. In their free time, students can join 240 student organizations, including five theater boards and six a capella groups; the oldest is a 50-year-old all-male group called the Carleton Singing Knights. Students can also get involved in the student-run radio station KRLX, which is ranked as one of the nation’s best radio stations. 100% of applicants who demonstrate financial need receive financial aid. Since 2000, Carleton graduates have won 112 Fulbright, 22 Watson, 122 National Science Foundation and 2 Rhodes awards. The school’s men’s frisbee team, the Carleton Ultimate Team, has qualified for the National Championship every year since 1989. The women’s team, Syzgy, has qualified for all but one national Championship since 1987.
