One of three University of California state schools established in the 1960s, the University of California, Irvine opened in 1965 and today serves over 31,000 students. The university’s 92 majors and 86 minors provide students with a wide array of academic options, including the first school of social ecology in the country. Irvine faculty have received three Nobel prizes (two in chemistry, one in physics). Irvine prides itself on its scientific innovation, and has successfully discovered how to unboil chicken eggs, among other findings. UCI is a top ten Forbes Best Value College, and alumni include Game of Thrones co-creator David Benioff and Golden Staten Warriors owner Joe Lacob. The “Rip Em’ Eaters” hand-sign can be seen across campus on game days, and creates a sense of pride and camaraderie across campus. The UC-Irvine Anteaters compete in the NCAA Division I.
