Founded in 1857 by tinware manufacturer John Boynton and wire mill owner Ichabod Washburn, Worcester Polytechnic Institute is known for its engineering and technology programs. A private research university situated in Worcester, Massachusetts’ second largest city, WPI’s offers more than 50 undergraduate degree programs to its 4,000+ students. The university has 18 different centers and institutes focusing on various areas of technology and engineering, including the Center for Holographic Studies and Laser micro-mechaTronics, the Metal Processing Institute, and the Fuel Cell Center. WPI is receives millions of dollars in annual funding from government organizations, most notably the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, and Department of Defense. The school is also home to over 200 student clubs and organizations, including several Greek Life chapters. The school's Global Perspective Program allows students to study abroad at 40 centers on six continents. The WPI Engineers compete in the NCAA Division III.
