The Rhode Island School of Design is a private arts school located in Providence, RI on a campus adjacent to Brown University. Founded in 1877, RISD is one of the best-known studio art schools in the country. Students can choose from 19 academic programs, including Film/Animation/Video, Jewelry & Metalsmithing and Ceramics. The close physical relationship between RISD and Brown has translated into an academic partnership as well -- students can take courses at either school for no cost. Ninety-three percent of freshmen return for their second year at RISD and the six-year graduation rate is 90%. RISD’s club athletic teams are known for their risque names: there’s the Nads (ice hockey), Nipples (soccer) and Pricks (fencing). The school’s unofficial mascot, Scrotie, is a giant penis. Seth MacFarlane, the creator of “Family Guy,” and director Gus Van Sant both graduated from RISD.
