Amherst College is a small liberal arts college located in Amherst, MA, known for its superior academics. When the college first opened in 1821, it was exclusively for men; in 1974, the board of trustees voted 15-3 to become coeducational. Currently, the school is 50% male and 50% female. Amherst has an intimate learning environment with an average class size of 19, and 84% of classes have fewer than 30 students. Ironically, a school that claims to be founded for “poor but talented students,” has a total annual cost of upwards of $66,000 and 55% of students receive financial aid. Students can select from 40 majors in the arts, humanities, and natural and social sciences, not to mention 6,000+ courses they can take through the Five College Consortium that includes Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges as well as UMass Amherst. It’s hard to ignore the robust school spirit at Amherst: the school boasts a 99% retention rate and 98% of students live on campus. By the fall of 2018, the college plans on completing The Greenway Projects, which will include new dorms, a natural amphitheater, an outdoor recreation area and a 230,000-square-foot science center. Notable alumni include 30th President Calvin Coolidge, writer David Foster Wallace and author Dan Brown.
