When Boston College was founded by Jesuits in 1863, it was a single-building “streetcar college” for Boston commuters. Today, Boston College is among the nation’s top universities and has produced high-power figures like former Secretary of State John Kerry, Goldman Sachs managing director Steve Barry, actor and producer Amy Poehler and NFL MVP Matt Ryan. It is also one of the nation’s most expensive institutions of higher education, but with over $36 million in scholarships and grant aid, and comparatively high salaries for alumni, BC still ranks well in the Forbes Best Value Colleges list. The Edmund H. Shea Jr. Center for Entrepreneurship offers an array of opportunities for aspiring businesspeople, including the $1 million FORBES Global Change World pitch competition. Athletics for the Eagles are huge, with traditions like an exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox and the Beanpot Trophy hockey tournament against the other Boston schools.
