A pioneer all-women’s college with a white-glove reputation, Vassar College became coeducational in 1969 and has since become a nationally recognized liberal school dedicated to academic excellence, close-knit environment and educational opportunity for underrepresented groups, including first-generation students. With a classic 1,000-acre campus in Poughkeepsie, NY, just two hours from New York City, Vassar offers over 50 undergraduate majors; unlike most liberal arts schools, there is no core curriculum, allowing students to build an interdisciplinary education experience catered to their interests. The most popular majors are psychology, English and economics. Students can choose from over 120 student clubs and organizations, including the nationally recognized AirCappella and the country’s oldest weekly college newspaper, The Miscellany News. There are no Greek life organizations on campus. Sustainability is encouraged by the Vassar Greens, who spearhead initiatives such as banning plastic water bottles on campus. Notable alumni include actress Meryl Streep, entrepreneur Caterina Fake, and computer scientist and Navy rear admiral Grace Hopper.
