Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a public research university distinguished for its robust and comprehensive research. Virginia Tech, whose main campus is in Blacksburg, VA, manages a research portfolio of $504 million. In 2015 alone, research resulted in 34 patents and 25 license and options agreements. Established in 1872, Virginia Tech is one of three public universities with an active corps of cadets and “civilian” lifestyle on campus. The technical institution is best known for its college of engineering and offers more than 100 bachelor's degree programs through its seven undergraduate academic colleges. All students are required to complete the Curriculum for Liberal Education to graduate. The Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, which houses more than 180 companies, helps nurture future entrepreneurs. Outside of class, the school offers a vibrant community of more than 800 student organizations and Greek societies. Around 20% of undergraduates are in a fraternity or sorority. The Corps of Cadets – whose members are also enrolled in the university’s Army ROTC, Navy ROTC and Air Force ROTC programs – plays a prominent role in the school’s tradition. The Hokies’ 19 teams compete in NCAA’s Division I.
