At Furman, all students live on its 750-acre campus, home to an Asian garden, recreation of Henry David Thoreau’s cabin and an 18-hole golf course. Formerly associated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, Furman broke ties in 1992 and is now secular. Two-thirds of the student body participate in community service and, when looking from a break for class, can join over 150 student groups. With around 40 areas of study, Furman students enjoy an average class size of 19 students. Expect to be busy at Furman: over 85% of the student body is involved in research or an internship. Notable alumni include professional soccer player Clint Dempsey and Herman Lay, the founder of Lay’s potato chips.
