The Georgia Institute of Technology, founded in 1885, helped to transform the southern United States transition from an agrarian to industrial economy. The school now services close over 15,000 undergraduate students, of which half are nonwhite. For students interested in science and engineering, Georgia Tech offers a full slate of nationally recognized academic programs, in addition to 12 interdisciplinary research institutes and 11 interdisciplinary research centers. While the most popular areas of study are engineering, business and computer science, it’s not all bruising academic work at Georgia Tech. Students have over 500 student clubs and activities as well as 57 Greek organizations to choose from. They can also cheer on the university’s Division I athletics teams, known by the moniker the “Yellow Jackets.” Famous Georgia Tech alumni include President Jimmy Carter and comedian Jeff Foxworthy.
