Founded in 1800, Middlebury College, a close-knit private liberal arts college in rural Middlebury, VT, has long distinguished itself as one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the U.S. While known for its stellar academic reputation -- it’s part of the cluster of “Little Ivies” -- and highly involved student body, Middlebury earned some unwanted national attention in spring 2017 after 74 students were disciplined for disrupting a speaker event with controversial author Charles Murray. The school focuses on a core liberal arts curriculum with an emphasis on writing and courses that stress cultural awareness. Over 30% of Middlebury’s students study the social sciences. The school operates distinguished foreign language programs, and Middlebury Schools Abroad has locations in 38 global cities. Additionally, Middlebury aims to integrate sustainability into all aspects of campus life, and achieved carbon neutrality in 2016. The Middlebury Panthers compete in NCAA Division III athletics.
