In 1819, Thomas Jefferson established the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, as the first college to blend the sciences and the humanities. One of the highly selective Public Ivies, UVA is known for its superior academics, with nearly 90% of admitted students graduating in the top 10% of their high school class. Additionally, UVA’s academic prowess is evident in this year’s graduating class, which produced two Rhodes Scholars, two Marshall Scholars and five Fulbright Scholars. The campus is known for its classical architecture designed by Jefferson and is broken up into 12 schools, with 88 undergraduate bachelor’s, 82 master’s and 54 doctoral degrees available. A recent study shows that UVA’s community impact is vast: the university is responsible for over 51,653 jobs (1 in 76 jobs in the Commonwealth area are the byproduct of UVA) and had an economic impact of $5.9 billion in 2015. Considered a major research university, Virginia’s research generates about $650 million of 2016 annual economic impact. The Virginia Cavaliers are also known for their superb athletic programs, particularly in lacrosse, football, baseball, tennis and basketball. Notable alumni and former students include Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, billionaire Paul Tudor Jones and writer-actress-director Tina Fey.
