Rice University, located on 300 acres in the heart of Houston, TX, is a highly competitive research university, set apart by its scientific research ventures and distinctive student honor code. Students can pick from over 50 courses of study -- 25% choose engineering. The social sciences and biology are other popular major choices. Research at Rice cuts across traditional, academic barriers as the school hosts 53 interdisciplinary centers, including the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy, which has brought a number of national and world leaders and scholars to campus. The student Honor Code, established in 1912, is a signature feature of academics at Rice. Students regularly take unproctored exams and are given take-home assignments with the assurance that any cheaters will be held accountable before a student-elected Honor Council. Rice has a history with some former U.S. presidents: George H.W. Bush served as an adjunct professor of administrative science at Rice prior to becoming vice president, and he chose Rice to host the 16th G7 Summit in 1990. In 1962, John F. Kennedy famously persuaded the American public to support a manned space flight to the moon, claiming we should strive to put a man on the moon for the same reason the Rice football team plays the University of Texas: it is hard. Rice’s varsity athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division I level.
