Since its opening in 1794, Bowdoin College has offered its students a top-notch liberal arts education against a scenic New England backdrop. Its curriculum, rooted in then-President William DeWitt Hyde’s 1906 address “The Offer of the College,” includes a first-year keystone seminar and five distribution areas. Bowdoin also emphasizes “The Common Good,” a value set bolstered by the Joseph McKeen Center for the Common Good and carried out through community-based courses, community research and volunteering. The social sciences dominate at Bowdoin, with more than a third of the student body majoring in those areas. The student-run publication The Bowdoin Orient is the oldest continuously-run college weekly in the nation. The private college’s location in the small town of Brunswick, ME places it within 30 minutes of the Portland coast, and the Coastal Studies Center takes advantage of two and a half miles of shoreline to study climate change and other environmental issues. Distinguished Bowdoin alumni include President Franklin Pierce, American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault and Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings.
