Founded in 1911 upon the idea that Dallas, TX needed an excellent university to meet its potential, Southern Methodist University is a private research university affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Business administration is the most popular of the 106 undergraduate degrees offered among SMU’s seven schools. Students can take advantage of a extensive study abroad programs, which offer study and service experiences in over 50 countries. SMU is home to eight libraries that house over four million volumes, making it one of the largest private book collections in the southwest. Students can also take advantage of the Willis M. Tate Distinguished Lecture Series, which brings well-known speakers to campus. SMU is known for its superior football and basketball teams, who are known as the Mustangs and produced Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson. Notable alumni include former First Lady Laura Bush and Indianapolis Colts owner James Irsay.
