Named after the Supreme Court’s first Jewish justice, Brandeis University is a prestigious nonsectarian research university nine miles west of Boston. Its Heller School for Social Policy and Management was the nation’s first school whose academic area melded social welfare and policy. Today, the Heller School’s post-grad centers receives $18 million in grants annually. Brandeis also houses the Asper Center for Global Entrepreneurship, which hosts the school’s 3 Day Start-Up Challenge. 21% of the undergraduate student body is international. One of the school’s more interesting traditions is the Liquid Latex show, a 17-year-old performance done in only underwear and latex paint. Another tradition is the decoration of Justice Brandeis’s statue: students dress him to entertain or inform the student body. Since 1948, Brandeis has produced prominent alumni, including Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and actress Debra Messing.
