Swarthmore College is a private liberal arts college located in Swarthmore, PA, about 11 miles southwest of Philadelphia. Founded in 1864 by Quakers as a coeducational school, Swarthmore is one of the nation’s premier small liberal arts colleges. Set on 425 bucolic acres in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Swarthmore offers easy access to the city; students can take classes at the University of Pennsylvania or Bryn Mawr and Haverford colleges. Swarthmore students can choose from among 40 courses of study, with the opportunity to design their own major. Roughly one-third of students participate in the school’s honors program. Outside of class, students join more than 100 student organizations, study at 7 libraries, and compete on 22 varsity sports teams, not to mention more than 60% who volunteer and 66% who engage in undergraduate research. First-year Swarthmore students kick off their four years with First Collection, a special ceremony involving speeches and candle-lighting and handshaking rituals.
