The United States Naval Academy is FORBES’ top military academy in 2017. Its four-year graduation rate is among the nation’s best, as is the earnings potential for its graduates. Chalk it up to Navy’s high-powered academics and extensive application process -- only 7.4% of hopeful midshipmen are actually selected to go to Annapolis. It also doesn't hurt that the school is free of charge, although what likely hurts are the eight-week summer military training sessions for midshipmen. The majority of students (at least 65%, per the needs of the U.S. Navy and national security) study in one of the STEM fields, including the emerging area of cyber operations. 19 of USNA’s 25 majors are in the technical disciplines and all midshipmen are required to take two mandatory cyber courses. The star-studded alumni of Navy include five Secretaries of the Navy, President Jimmy Carter, 24 members of Congress, including senator and war hero John McCain and NFL legend Roger Staubach, a Heisman Trophy winner who famously returned from the years in the military that he owed Navy to win the Dallas Cowboys their first Super Bowl.
