The United States Military Academy is one of the nation's most historic universities, producing a reliable stream of future service members: the school graduates around 20% of incoming Second Lieutenants each year. Located in West Point, NY, the Military Academy is free of charge; in lieu of tuition, cadets - as students are called - serve a minimum of 5 years on active duty and 3 years in the ready reserve upon graduation. This arrangement contributes to the school's elite status: less than 10% of applicants are accepted, and to even be considered for admission, candidates must obtain nominations from their congressperson, one of their senators or the Vice President. Around 92% of admitted students this year were varsity athletes in high school. However, military training is not all the Military Academy has to offer. The public university houses more than 20 research centers and 39 majors. Its curriculum requires cadets to complete a senior capstone research project, and on the school's annual Projects Day, one cadet receives the Scott R. Clark Innovation for Soldiers Award for demonstrating an innovative approach to solving a problem of direct application to the army.
