University of Maryland, College Park is a large public research university located in the city of College Park, on the northeast border of Washington, D.C. Founded 1856, the university is the flagship institution of the University of System of Maryland. Students can choose from more than 90 undergraduate majors across 12 colleges, design their own major through the Individual Studies Program, or enroll in several pre-professional programs. The most popular areas are social sciences, business and engineering. UM’s proximity to the nation’s capital has resulted in several research partnerships with the National Institute of Health, NASA, National Institute of Standards and technology and Department of Homeland Security. UM has an annual research budget of approximately $550 million and promotes entrepreneurship through “30 Days of Entrepreneurship”, which awards more than a quarter million dollars for top ideas and innovations.The UM faculty includes three Nobel Laureates, three Pulitzer Prize winners, 56 members of the national academies and scores of Fulbright scholars. In their spare time, students can choose from more than 150 clubs and student organizations and more than 30 Greek chapters. The Terps compete in NCAA Division I athletics and eight programs, winning a total of 42 national championships, which is the second most of any Big Ten school. It's one of two universities in the division to have won national championships in football and men's and women's basketball.
