Opened in 1871 in Northampton, MA, Smith College is one of the largest all-women’s schools in the nation, with students hailing from 48 states and 68 countries. It is one of the exclusive Seven Sisters colleges, a group of female-only colleges on the East Coast which also includes Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Mount Holyoke, Radcliffe, Vassar and Wellesley. The mission of Smith is to empower women to become leaders and lead lives of distinction and purpose. The liberal arts curriculum is broken up into seven categories – literature, historical studies, social sciences, natural science, mathematics and analytic philosophy, the arts and foreign language – focused on understanding the past, present and future. Students can choose from over 50 areas of study. Study abroad is highly encouraged, with nearly half of all juniors spending a semester in a foreign country. Since 1877, students have enjoyed Mountain Day – a tradition in which the school’s president cancels classes due to superb weather and students instead enjoy a picnic. Smith has produced many notable alumni including Julia Child, Nancy Regan, Barbra Bush, Gloria Steinem and Sylvia Plath.
