The University of Rochester is a private research university in Rochester, NY. Founded in 1850 as a Baptist-sponsored institution, the school is now nonsectarian. Rochester is known for its thriving research activity; it received $361 million in federal research funding in 2016, and a full 77% of undergraduate students participate in research. In the classroom, Rochester students can choose from more than 75 majors across 8 schools. Rochester is particularly known for the Eastman School of Music, home to more than 20 student ensembles, and the Institute of Optics, the first educational program devoted solely to the study of optics.
