The University of Southern California is a private research university located in Los Angeles, CA. Founded in 1880, USC has developed into a training ground for California’s elite in one of the world’s major urban centers. USC’s Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences offers 70 majors; the school’s 87 minors encompass a slew of unique fields, from Children and Families in Urban America to Cultures and Politics of the Pacific Rim to Political Organizing in the Digital Age. Extracurricular life at USC is equally diverse: students can join more than 700 registered clubs and organizations, hone their leadership skills through special programming or volunteer. USC’s 20 NCAA Division I sports teams compete in the Pac-12 conference. USC athletes are also known for their Olympic success, with a total of 309 medals earned to date. If it were its own nation, USC’s all-time Summer Olympic medals would rank the school as the 14th-most among all countries. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, astronaut Neil Armstrong and first lady Pat Nixon are some of USC’s more famous alumni.
