The University of Wisconsin, Madison is the flagship university of the UW system and is known for its superior academics, athletics and committed fan base. The public research institution was founded in 1848 as Wisconsin achieved statehood and currently sits on a 936-acre campus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona. Two years ago, the school temporarily raised the cap on the number of out-of-state students admitted, leading to a 4% climb in out-of-state enrollment in 2016. Wisconsin is made up of eight different schools that offer 232 undergraduate majors, with biological and biomedical sciences, engineering and business among the most popular. Undergrads have the opportunity to work on research projects with leading faculty members and academic staff, and the school offers several scholarships for projects in community economic development and science education. The Wisconsin Badger fans, including approximately 435,000 living alumni, are devoted to UW athletics and the school’s mascot, Bucky Badger. The Badgers compete in the NCAA Big Ten Conference and are known for their winning football and basketball teams. Notable alumni include filmmaker Errol Morris, news anchor Great Van Susteren and architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
