At George Washington University, a private research institution nestled in the Foggy Bottom section of Washington, D.C., students can expect to rub shoulders with the nation’s political elite and grow familiar with the city’s array of museums and cultural centers. Founded in 1821 by an Act of Congress and inspired by George Washington’s lifelong call for a centrally-located national university, GWU has kept its close ties to the national government ever since. GWU is the only school in the country to graduate its students in the National Mall. Around 30% of GWU students are affiliated with Greek life and Colonials tend to major in the social sciences and health-related fields. Among the school’s many notable alumni include political luminaries like First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, former Secretary of State Colin Powell and actress Kerry Washington, best known as Olivia Pope on “Scandal.”
