Located directly across the street from Columbia University in New York City, Barnard College is a private all-women liberal arts school and one of the Seven Sisters schools. Its relationship with its Ivy League neighbor is mutually beneficial: Barnard partners with Columbia to give its students access to the university’s academic, social, athletic (NCAA Division I as well as club and intramural sports) and extracurricular activities. Barnard offers 60 different majors (nearly evenly divided between natural sciences, social sciences and humanities), and 70% of classes have 19 students or fewer. Thirty-nine percent of all students receive Barnard aid, and the average grant or scholarship aid package is $42,345. Popular internship destinations include Warner Music Group, Hearst Publications and Saturday Night Live. Barnard offers free and discounted tickets to events and shows in the city. Prominent alumnae include Martha Stewart, actress Greta Gerwig and CARE CEO Helene Gayle, MD. Doctors Without Borders International President Joanne Liu delivered the keynote address at the college’s 2017 commencement.
