Founded in 1833, Oberlin College is the oldest coeducational liberal arts college in the country and the second oldest continually operating coeducational university in the world. This private university -- located in Oberlin, OH, just west of Cleveland -- has a reputation for blending progressive politics and artistic creativity with strong academics. The school follows a unique academic structure that consists of only two colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences and the famous Conservatory of Music. Oberlin’s nationally recognized Conservatory, the oldest continuously operating conservatory in the country, welcomes 580 students from 43 states and 44 countries to an intimate learning environment with a student-to-faculty ratio of just 6:1. Many of the conservatory’s students are recipients of the National Medal of Arts. Notable alumni include violinist Jennifer Koh. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is equally impressive; it offers more than 47 majors and boasts an 11:1 student to faculty ratio, with visual arts, social sciences and biological sciences among the most popular. Outside of class, students can explore more than 175 student organizations, club sports and intramural teams. Uniquely, there is no Greek life at Oberlin. The Experimental College, or “ExCo” is a student organization and department that sponsors for-credit courses taught by students, faculty and community members.
