Macalester College is a small, private liberal arts school based in Saint Paul, MN. This distinguished private liberal arts college, founded in 1874, emphasizes internationalism and multiculturalism, with a quarter of the student body hailing from 87 foreign countries. Macalester's graduates go on to achieve great things: the school has produced 46 Fulbright awards, 36 National Science Foundation fellows and a Rhodes Scholar over the past decade. Of the 63 areas of study available, mathematics is the most popular, followed by biology, political science, and international studies. 60% of MC students participate in the Study Away program; the most competitive options send students to study ecology and human origins in Tanzania and theater in London. Committed to sustainability, the school plans to be a zero-waste campus by 2020 and carbon neutral by 2025. Each April, Macalester hosts Springfest, a music festival featuring artists of varying genres. MC is known for its culture of tolerance: it hosts the Lavender Reception annually to honor the LGBTQA community on campus. Notable former students include super-agent Ari Emanuel, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, author Tim O’Brien, and former Vice President Walter Mondale.
