A member of the Claremont Colleges consortium – which includes Pomona, Harvey Mudd, Pitzer, and Scripps Colleges – Claremont McKenna University was founded at the close of World War II, with many of its first students attending through the G.I. Bill. A small, private liberal arts institution lying 30 miles east of Los Angeles in Claremont, California, the school offers 2,000 courses, 33 undergraduate majors, and a series of eight “sequences” which allow students to take an assortment of classes across different academic departments. The school is highly selective, and admits about 9% of prospective students. CMU’s tree-lined campus is home to the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum, an event hall that has hosted dozens of dinner conferences and prestigious speakers including Bill Clinton, Anderson Cooper, and Bono. Additionally, a state-of-the-art Autism research center is located on campus, and the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship provides students a space to foster entrepreneurial and research initiatives. Each senior must spend an entire semester refining their senior thesis, and it is traditional to be given and then share a bottle of champagne with the class registrar upon completion.
