A remarkably tight-knit private liberal arts school in Waterville, ME, Colby College also has a seriously global mindset. 70% of students study abroad during their time at Colby, and over 10% of students are international. Colby organized the first collegiate anti-slavery society in 1833, and its rich social sciences programs have produced big-name scholars like Pulitzer-prize winning historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Alan Taylor. Colby also hosts notable programs in the hard sciences, including its engineering dual degree programs with Dartmouth College and Columbia University and its CAPS program for underrepresented groups in the sciences. Its “Jan Plan” abbreviated term gives students the opportunity to spend a month pursuing a specialized academic interest, whether that's an abroad course, research or an internship. Three Jan Plans are required, but 9 in 10 students do four. Colby was the fourth American college to become carbon neutral. About 40% of students receive financial aid grants from the college.
