When industrialist and abolitionist Peter Cooper founded The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1859, he wanted to create an affordable and diverse educational institution. The Cooper Union had no gender or race barrier, and it hosted a relatively-unknown presidential candidate named Abraham Lincoln as a speaker before the Civil War ever began. Since then, Foundation Building has welcomed other high-powered speakers like Mark Twain and Barack Obama. Peter Cooper’s vision of accessibility still resonates: although all students received full-tuition scholarships prior to 2014, incoming students at the Cooper Union still receive a half-tuition scholarship. Around 20% are international students, and almost 19% are Asian-Americans. Its academics are split between the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture, the School of Art and the Albert Nerken School of Engineering. Cooper Union has a variety of extracurricular opportunities, including varsity sports, Greek organizations and performance groups.
