In 1819, 13 men in Hamilton, NY with $13 each prayed 13 prayers to create a Colgate campus constitution with 13 articles. Though 13 is a notorious number, Colgate University has been far from unlucky – the medium-sized private liberal arts university has become one of the top schools in the country. Its 9:1 student-faculty ratio and 94% first-to-second year retention rate are among the top in the nation, and its over -90% graduation rate is complimented by a 98% athlete graduation rate. Through its Entrepreneur Weekend, the university educates students and alumni by bringing in speakers like Jessica Alba, Sir Richard Branson and Rent the Runway cofounder Jennifer Hyman. Colgate plans to be carbon-neutral by its bicentennial in 2019, and student interns and volunteers manage the half-acre Community Garden on the western edge of its hillside campus. As for the school’s lucky number, students and alumni celebrate every Friday the 13th in their maroon Colgate clothes.
