The United States Air Force Academy is one of the nation’s most prestigious institutions of higher education. Its STEM programs are among the best, and are distinguished by the college’s partnership with the Institute for National Security Studies. Although the school is known for its STEM fields, it also offers other programs like legal studies, economics and history. Uniquely among public institutions, Air Force depends on private funding for many of its development initiatives and has attracted significant philanthropic and research investment. A major tenant of Air Force Academy life is athletics: a quarter of cadets are Division I athletes, and all students are required to play some competitive sport. USAFA’s campus, which doubles as a base for the Air Force itself, is located in Colorado Springs. Pilot Sully Sullenberger and astronaut Lt. Gen. Susan Helms are Air Force alumni.
