Franklin and Marshall College is a private liberal arts college in Lancaster, PA, with an educational legacy dating back to the colonial era. The existing college is a product of a merger in 1853 between Franklin College, founded in 1787 and named after founding father Benjamin Franklin, and Marshall College, named after the first Chief Justice of the United States John Marshall. F&M’s small student body can choose from around 40 different majors. Beside its 200-acre campus in central Pennsylvania, F&M also has a study abroad program in Bath, England. The most popular areas of study include the social sciences, biological and biomedical studies as well as business. More than half of F&M seniors opt for an independent study or self-designed major. Greek organizations have had a tumultuous relationship to F&M in past years. After derecognizing Greek organizations in 1988, F&M accredited them as campus groups again in 2004. Over 40% of students are now affiliated with a fraternity or sorority. Last year, President Daniel Porterfield was named a White House “Champion of Change for College Opportunity,” for recruiting under served student populations.
