The University of Texas, Austin is a public research university in Austin, TX, the flagship branch of the University of Texas system. Though UT-Austin’s history can be traced back to a 1839 directive from Texas’ congress to address the state’s higher education needs, the school did not open until 1883. Today, it is one of the largest universities in the country, with well over 50,000 students. Undergraduates can choose from 156 degree programs; there are 400 study abroad opportunities in 78 countries. Outside of class, students can visit 4 museums, hit the books at 17 libraries, or join 1,300 student organizations. The UT-Austin Longhorns compete on 20 NCAA Division I teams, cheered on by the 10-foot-tall Big Bertha, a key member of the marching band and the largest bass drum in the world. UT-Austin alumni include Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, former first lady Lady Bird Johnson, CBS anchor Walter Cronkite and actor Owen Wilson.
