Founded in 1960 and nestled in the chic La Jolla community, the University of California, San Diego is a public sea-grant and space-grant university. Originally an oceanographic institution, the university receives over $1 billion in research funding annually; over 650 companies have been launched using technology produced by faculty and alumni. Additionally, UCSD has over 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, the most popular programs, with social sciences, engineering, and biology among the most popular. Greek Life is big at UCSD, with 24 fraternities and 19 sororities, not to mention more than 500 clubs and organizations. The watermelon drop summer physics experiment is the oldest student tradition at UCSD. Notable alumni include GoPro founder Nick Woodman and 2011 Nobel Prize in Medicine recipient Bruce Beutler. The UCSD Tritons compete in the NCAA Division II.
