Grinnell College is a private liberal arts college located in Grinnell, IA. Even though Grinnell's enrollment hovers just over 1,600 undergraduates, its $1.649 billion endowment is one of the largest in the country, and has notably outperformed much wealthier schools. Part of the school’s financial clout may stem, in part, from the longtime presence of billionaire Warren Buffett, who served on Grinnell’s board of trustees for 43 years. As an institutional ethos, Grinnell has prided itself on “social responsibility,” ensuring students govern their own conduct. First year students can apply for the Global Learning Program, an opportunity to travel abroad with faculty for a semester. The university’s 20 varsity athletic teams, known as the Pioneers, compete in the NCAA-Division III level and are members of the Midwest Conference. The men’s basketball team is famous for a “run-and-gun” style emphasizing three-point shots, frequent substitutions and a full-court press. For their unique style of play, known as the “Grinnell system,” the squad became the first Division III school to have a game featured on ESPN.
