Established in 1876 as the first research-focused university in the country, John Hopkins University is one of the nation’s premier, private research universities. Located in Baltimore, MD and named for philanthropist and abolitionist John Hopkins, the school’s impact extends beyond the country, with campuses in Italy and China, and exchange programs with University College of London and the National University of Singapore. Noted for its STEM pedigree, JHU offers more than 40 majors, and biomedical engineering, public health and neuroscience are among the most popular majors. JHU is the leading research institute in the country, consistently earning enormous amounts of research funding from the National Science Foundation, and dedicating $2.3 billion to research in fiscal year 2015. But it's not all books and research at JHU: students can participate in more than 400 student organizations and intramural sports. The school boasts an impressive list of alumni, including 36 Nobel laureates, 52 American Academy of Arts and Sciences members, seven recipients of the Lasker Medical Research Award, six MacArthur fellows, two Presidential Medal of Freedom winners and one Pulitzer Prize winner. The first implantable, rechargeable pacemaker was invented at JHU in 1972. The Blue Jays men’s lacrosse team have won 44 championship titles, including 9 NCAA Division I titles. A bizarre phenomenon at Johns Hopkins occurs each year when hundreds of pink flamingos mysteriously appear on Keyser Quad.
