Founded in 1868, the University of California, Berkeley is the California state school system’s oldest institution; today, it is one of the nation's top public universities, earning the top spot on FORBES' Best Value Colleges list in 2017. Berkeley’s 37,000+ students can choose from over 350 degree programs under the tutelage of some of the best professors in the world. Berkeley faculty have included atomic bomb developer J.R. Oppenheimer and former chair of the Federal Reserve Board Janet Yellen, while current faculty include four Pulitzer Prize winners, seven Nobel Prize recipients, 13 Fulbright scholars, and several other prestigious award winners. Additionally, Berkeley has been home to 117 Olympic gold medal winners, and famous alumni include Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Chief Justice Earl Warren, soccer star Alex Morgan, and Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. The university is also the all-time leading producer of Peace Corps volunteers, and has been on the forefront of major scientific breakthroughs including global malaria treatment, bionic legs, and visual brain waves. The UC-Berkeley Bears compete in the Pac-12 of the NCAA Division I, and battle Stanford University in the annual “Big Game” football game for possession of the “Stanford Axe” trophy.
