Founded in 1749, Washington and Lee University, a private liberal arts university in Lexington, VA, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the U.S. The 325-acre campus lies at the heart of Lexington and is adjacent to the Virginia Military Institute in the Shenandoah Valley. The school’s historical roots have strong ties to the country: it was named after former U.S. President George Washington, whose $20,000 endowment fueled the fledgling school, and former General Robert E. Lee, who served as president from 1865 to 1870. W&L is divided into three schools: The College; the Williams School of Commerce, Economics and Politics; and the School of Law. It offers 40 undergraduate majors and 29 minors, including several interdisciplinary programs. The school runs on a 12-week, 12-week, 4-week trimester system. The school’s Honor System has been the central feature of W&L for well over a century, and is entirely self-regulated by the student body, with oversight from the faculty or board of trustees. There are also several special academic opportunities for students, including the Shepherd Program for the Interdisciplinary Study of Poverty and Human Capability and the Mudd Center for Ethics and the Spring Term Immersion program, which lets students plunge into a unique course for four weeks. Students keep busy outside of class with over 130 student clubs and organizations. On top of being highly engaged in academics, W&L students are politically involved on campus. During presidential election years, students traditionally hold a mock convention to predict who the opposition party will nominate to run for President.
