At Lehigh University, just as much seems to happen outside the classroom as inside of it. Founded in 1865 by railroad tycoon Asa Packer, the private research university is located in Bethlehem, PA, right down the road from its rival, Lafayette College, on 2,000 acres across three campuses. More than 95% of students participate in an extracurricular activity, and the university contributes approximately 65,000 hours of community service annually. Thirty percent of students pursue an academically rigorous engineering degree, and over 40% go abroad to study. Lehigh was the sixth university worldwide to be recognized as an NGO by the United Nations, and partnerships with the UN to provide 1,500 Lehigh community members with access to conferences, briefings, meetings and seminars. About 33% of undergraduate men and 42% of undergraduate women are involved in Greek life. The father of microsurgery, Harry J. Buncke, is a Lehigh alumnus, as is escalator inventor Jesse W. Reno.
