One of the eight "Public Ivies", the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill is known for its excellent academics, spirited fan base, progressive values and Southern charm. The 729-acre picturesque campus is located in the bustling college town of Chapel Hill. UNC offers 77 undergraduate majors (plus hundreds of master’s and doctoral programs) across 14 schools. Outside of class, it’s hard for the university’s 18,500+ undergraduate students to get bored, with more than 600 student clubs and organizations, including the well-regarded student newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel. About a third of students participate in one of 325 study abroad programs. Innovation, leadership and entrepreneurship is preached at the university, evident by roughly 475 total startups that originated at UNC. The Tar Heels are known as one of the all-time greatest athletic programs, particularly for their men’s basketball team -- which won the 2017 NCAA tournament. Many of the greatest athletes of all-time originally played at UNC, including Michael Jordan, Lawrence Taylor and Mia Hamm. Students seem to love UNC, as almost all freshman return for their sophomore year. With all UNC has to offer, it’s unsurprisingly hard for out-of-state students to be accepted: over 80% of students are North Carolinians.
