Established in 1831 and located in New York City, New York University has grown into the largest independent research university in the U.S., encompassing 19 schools, colleges and divisions, including the highly regarded Stern School of Business and Tisch School of the Arts. NYU established the first global network university with comprehensive liberal arts campuses in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai and research facilities and programs in Accra, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Prague, Sydney and Tel Aviv, among others. The Violets boast a highly diverse student body population; minorities and international students make up 56% of the total undergraduate student body. Commencement is held at Yankee Stadium. Alumni include 37 Nobel Laureates, over 30 Pulitzer Prize winners, over 30 Academy Award winners, and hundreds of members of the National Academies of Sciences. Notable alumni include comedian Aziz Ansari, film directors Martin Scorsese and Spike Lee, Alan Greenspan, Idina Menzel and the founders of both MTV and Def Jam Records.
