Money isn’t everything, but for students at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, it sure is a big thing. USMMA is a top-ten school for salary potential in the nation, and even though the institution does not charge tuition, there is an annual fee for services such as laundry, barber shop and tailor. What graduation does bring is options -- USMMA grads get a Bachelor of Science degree, a U.S. Coast Guard license, and an officer’s commission in the U.S. Armed Forces. However, reaching that point is the hard part; the school requires more credit hours than any other service academy. A unique component of the USMMA experience is the Sea Year, a 75-year-old program that sends pairs of students on a variety of operating U.S. flag merchant vessels across the world to travel various trade routes. Its Kings Point, NY campus is covers more than 80 acres and docks over 100 training vessels.
