Located in Evanston, IL, Northwestern University is private research university founded in 1851. Its first classes began in the fall of 1855 with two faculty members and 10 students. Today, Northwestern is consistently ranked one of the Midwest's most elite schools, with campuses in Chicago and Doha, Qatar, along with academic facilities in Washington D.C. and San Francisco. Northwestern offers more than 124 undergraduate degrees across its six undergraduate schools, and is particularly renowned for its law, medicine, journalism and art programs. A leading research university, Northwestern is home to 90 school-based and 50 research centers, and boasts a total endowment of $9.8 billion and annual research sponsorship of $649.7 million. Northwestern follows the quarter system, where students have three 10-week terms. Students can choose from more than 400 extracurricular groups or rush 46 Greek chapters; 40% of students are involved in the Greek community. The Wildcats compete in NCAA Division I, and the college football team is a member of the Big Ten Conference. The Wildcats have won three Big Ten championships or co-championships since 1995, and have been "bowl eligible” in six out of the last seven seasons. Its football players consistently rank among the national leaders in graduation rates, having received the Academic Achievement Award four times since 2002. Notable former students include Stephen Colbert, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Seth Meyers and George R.R. Martin.
