Founded in 1887, Occidental College is a private liberal arts college located in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. Founded by clergy and members of the Presbyterian Church, the university is one of the oldest in the West Coast. For more than 125 years, Oxy has prided itself on its tight-knit community that values diversity: minorities and international students make up near half of the student population. Students can choose from more than 30 majors across 40 departments and programs; economics is the most popular choice. Students must complete the core program, which includes first-year seminars and writing exercises, and live on-campus for their first three years. Oxy offers students the unique opportunity to take classes at CalTech and Art Center College of Design, or obtain a joint degree from Columbia, Caltech or Keck Graduate Institute, as part of its exchange and cooperative programs. Each year, Oxy selects six highly qualified students to receive an in-depth education on 21st century global community through the William and Elizabeth Kahane United Nations Program. This idyllic 120-acre campus studded with oak trees and eucalyptus is situated on a hillside, and is one of the nation’s leading Fulbright feeder schools, with 99 students winning the grant since 2003. Former students include U.S. president Barack Obama and former Congressman and Buffalo Bills quarterback Jack Kemp.
