Founded in 1911, Reed is a small liberal arts college located in Portland, OR. Known for its intellectually curious students and academically rigorous environment, Reed has produced 32 Rhodes Scholars and 103 Fulbright Scholars, both outsized totals for a school of its size. Reedies, as the college’s students are known, can choose from over 40 majors and programs. 20% of Reed’s students major in the social sciences -- biology and foreign languages are also popular courses of study. Close to 65% of students choose to attend graduate school at some point after leaving Reed. While Reed’s liberal and permissive campus culture has been one of its hallmarks for the past century, administrators have begun to crack down in recent years after fielding complaints that the school had been too lax in policing the use of illegal drugs by students. Steve Jobs, the cofounder of Apple, spent two years at Reed in the 1970s before dropping out.
