The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, founded in 1867 is one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions. The flagship of Illinois' public university system, it offers over 150 undergraduate programs through its 16 colleges. It is home to more than 80 laboratories, institutes and research centers, including the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. It also boasts one of the largest public university libraries in the world. Campus life includes 62 Greek houses as well as more than 1,000 student organizations, societies and teams. Every August, the campus celebrates “Quad Day” during Welcome Week, during which most school organizations gather to promote their clubs. The school’s varsity athletic teams, known as the Fighting Illini, compete in the Big Ten Conference (NCAA Division I). Notable alumni include Silicon Valley venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, YouTube co-founders Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, and the man considered to be the father of visible LED, Nick Holonyak, Jr.
