Founded in 1903, Skidmore College did not begin accepting male students until 1971 – today, the student body is about three-fifths female. The private liberal arts college is located in Saratoga Springs, NY, a small town just south of the Adirondack Mountains with a big reputation for privilege and horses. The liberal arts curriculum focuses on balance between the theoretical and applied learning. To help students accumulate to college life, Skidmore provides the First-Year Experience, a program in which students participate in seminars and peer mentoring. English, business, psychology and economics are the most popular of Skidmore's 43 majors. Research is encouraged, with about one-fifth of students participating in faculty-aided research and high participation in the Summer Student-Faculty Research Program. There is a plethora of organizations on campus, including the Skidmore News publication, SkidTV and 20 intramural and club sports. A heralded yearly tradition is the Beatles-inspired Beatlemore Skidmania, a two-day concert put on by various Skidmore musicians. The Skidmore Thoroughbreds compete in the NCAA Division III Liberty League. Notable former students include producer David Miner, actor Zazie Beetz, and CNN reporter Arwa Damon.
