Tufts University is a private research university in Medford and Somerville, MA, just outside of Boston. Founded in 1852 by Christian universalists, Tufts has become a major research institution whose elite academics and selective admissions puts it in the running against the Ivies and other highly competitive schools. Undergraduates in the School of Arts and Sciences can choose from more than 150 majors and minors; there are also undergraduate opportunities in the engineering and fine arts schools. About a third of Tufts students double major, and almost half of students graduate with a minor and/or a second major. Outside of class, nearly 95% of students are involved in at least one extracurricular activity, of which there are approximately 341 choices. Every morning on Halloween, Tufts students awake to pumpkins of all sizes placed throughout campus, tradition that's over 75 years old. Notable Tufts former students include billionaire Pierre Omidyar, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and actress Jessica Biel.
